Indian Railways to reserve lower and side lower berths for senior citizens, disabled people, and pregnant women, addressing the massive demand for these seats.

In a significant move to enhance the travel experience for vulnerable passengers, Indian Railways has announced the reservation of lower and side lower berths exclusively for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and pregnant women. This decision comes in response to the growing demand for lower berths, which offer easier access and greater comfort for passengers with special needs.

As part of this initiative, Indian Railways will allocate 6 to 7 lower berths in sleeper classes, 4 to 5 lower berths in 3-tier AC coaches, and 3 to 4 lower berths in 2-tier AC coaches specifically for senior citizens. The reserved seats aim to ensure that those who need them the most can travel with ease and dignity, without the discomfort of navigating upper or middle berths.

The demand for lower berths has been on the rise, particularly among senior citizens, disabled people, and pregnant women. These passengers often face difficulties in accessing upper berths due to physical limitations, making lower berths the preferred choice for their journeys. By reserving these berths, Indian Railways aims to address these challenges and provide a more inclusive and comfortable travel experience.

“There is a massive demand for lower berths, and we recognize the importance of meeting the needs of our senior citizens, disabled passengers, and expectant mothers,” said a senior official from Indian Railways. “This initiative is a step towards ensuring that our trains are accessible and comfortable for all passengers, particularly those with special requirements.”

The reservation of lower berths for these specific groups is expected to make a significant difference in their travel experience. In addition to the physical comfort, it also addresses the safety concerns associated with climbing to higher berths, which can be particularly challenging for elderly passengers and those with mobility issues.

The move has been widely welcomed by passenger associations and advocacy groups for senior citizens and disabled people. Many have praised Indian Railways for taking this proactive step towards inclusivity and accessibility, highlighting that such measures are essential in catering to the diverse needs of the traveling public.

“This is a much-needed initiative by Indian Railways,” said a spokesperson for an advocacy group for senior citizens. “Traveling by train is a common mode of transport for many of our members, and the availability of lower berths makes a world of difference to their comfort and safety. We are pleased to see Indian Railways prioritizing the needs of vulnerable passengers in this way.”

The reservation of lower berths is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to improve the travel experience for all passengers. The railway authorities have also been working on upgrading train coaches, enhancing onboard services, and improving station facilities to cater to the needs of a diverse passenger base.

With the implementation of this new reservation policy, Indian Railways is set to make train travel more comfortable and accessible for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and pregnant women. This initiative is a testament to the organization’s commitment to providing a safe, comfortable, and inclusive travel experience for all.
