Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal addresses media on the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, criticizing false media campaigns and reaffirming the police’s commitment to a fair investigation by the CBI.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has issued a strong statement in response to the ongoing media coverage of the rape-murder case involving a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case, which has sparked outrage and widespread media attention, has also been met with criticism directed at the Kolkata police for their handling of the investigation.

In a candid address, Commissioner Goyal expressed his frustration over what he described as a “malicious media campaign” that has cast doubt on the police’s efforts and integrity. He stressed that the Kolkata police have undertaken all necessary actions in the case and that any claims suggesting otherwise are unfounded. “What has happened here is because of the wrong media campaign, which has been a malicious media campaign going as far as Kolkata police is concerned,” Goyal said. “We have tried to satisfy the family but the rumours are being floated. I am extremely angry. We have not done anything wrong,” he added.

The Commissioner took particular issue with the portrayal of the police’s handling of the investigation, asserting that they have adhered strictly to the principles of justice and transparency. He rejected accusations that the police had failed to act decisively or had misled the public. “We have never said that there is only one person (accused). We have said that we are waiting for scientific evidence and it takes time,” Goyal explained. He emphasized that arrests cannot be made based on speculation alone, highlighting his commitment to upholding justice. “Just based on rumours, I can’t arrest a young PG student; it’s against my conscience,” he said.

Addressing the ongoing scrutiny and public pressure, Goyal reassured the public of the police’s dedication to a thorough investigation. He noted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case and expressed confidence that the national agency would conduct a fair and impartial probe. “There is so much pressure from the media, I have been very clear that we have done what is right. Now, the CBI is investigating it. They’ll do a fair deal. We will give all support to the CBI,” Goyal stated.

Commissioner Goyal also refuted specific allegations and rumors that have been circulating, particularly those regarding the nature of the crime scene and evidence. He denied reports that suggested tampering or physical manipulation of evidence, stressing that such claims are not supported by scientific findings. “False propaganda is going on that bones are broken, this is done and that is done, unfortunately, that is not supported by scientific evidence,” he asserted.

The Kolkata Police Commissioner’s remarks come at a critical juncture as the investigation continues and public sentiment remains highly charged. The case has not only impacted the local community but has also drawn national attention, amplifying the pressure on law enforcement agencies to deliver justice. As the CBI takes over the investigation, the focus now shifts to ensuring that the truth emerges and that justice is served, while navigating the complexities of media influence and public perception.
