A Delhi court on Saturday allowed Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who is jailed in the excise policy case, to come in person to file nomination forms for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Earlier on Friday, Rouse Avenue Court had allowed Sanjay Singh to file nomination form again as a member of Rajya Sabha. Special Judge MK Nagpal had accepted the application filed on behalf of Sanjay Singh.

On Friday, the court had directed the jail superintendent to allow signing of undertakings, nomination forms and other supporting documents in connection with the elections. The court had said that this should be allowed when Singh's legal representative and family members present it during their meeting in jail.

The Aam Aadmi Party has re-nominated senior leader Sanjay Singh as a member of the Rajya Sabha as his current term is scheduled to expire on January 27, 2024, his lawyer said in the application, appealing to the court. In such a situation, Singh should be allowed to sign while in custody. It is necessary to obtain No Dues Certificate for their re-enrolment.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh is currently in jail in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on October 4 in the excise policy scam case. The ED has alleged that Sanjay Singh played a key role in the formulation and implementation of the now defunct excise duty policy, which led to monetary benefits to some liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. On 22 December, the trial court rejected his bail plea, stating that prima facie the case against him was genuine and the evidence showed his involvement in the alleged crime. After this Sanjay Singh has filed a bail petition in the High Court.
