UP braces for a double attack of cold wave and dense fog as temperatures plummet. Yellow alert issued for multiple districts. Learn more about the chilling forecast.

The cold wave intensifies in Uttar Pradesh as dense fog and plunging temperatures create harsh winter conditions. Weather Department issues a yellow alert.

A Winter Double Blow for Uttar Pradesh

Residents of Uttar Pradesh are preparing for a challenging winter as the region faces a combination of biting cold waves and thick fog. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperatures in several districts have dropped significantly, with maximum temperatures also witnessing a decline of 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.

In its latest update, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, cautioning residents of severe weather conditions. The coming days are expected to be particularly harsh, with dense fog and cold wave conditions likely to persist through the final week of December.

Yellow Alert: Districts on High Alert

The IMD has warned of dense fog and cold waves affecting multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh. Areas such as Ballia, Mau, Azamgarh, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Balrampur, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, and Moradabad are likely to experience varying levels of fog.

Additionally, districts including Ayodhya, Gonda, Bahraich, Shravasti, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Bareilly, and Rampur are expected to bear the brunt of both dense fog and cold waves. The combined impact of these conditions will significantly reduce visibility and make outdoor activities more difficult for residents.

Why the Cold Wave Has Intensified

According to Professor Manoj Kumar Srivastava, a meteorologist at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the intensified cold wave is a result of a western disturbance affecting northern India. These disturbances are causing cold winds to sweep across Uttar Pradesh, leading to a significant drop in temperatures.

Professor Srivastava predicts a slight relief in the coming three days, with temperatures expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. However, until then, residents should brace for the ongoing cold spell and prepare for challenging weather conditions.

Ayodhya Records the Coldest Temperature

The chill has been particularly severe in Ayodhya, which recorded the lowest temperature in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. The minimum temperature plunged to 2.5 degrees Celsius, down from Saturday’s 3 degrees Celsius. This marks one of the coldest spells the region has experienced this season.

Other districts, including Varanasi, Lucknow, and Muzaffarnagar, have also reported significant drops in minimum temperatures, reflecting the widespread nature of the cold wave.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

With such harsh weather conditions, the IMD and local authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions. People are advised to limit outdoor activities during the early morning and late-night hours, when temperatures and visibility are at their lowest.

Drivers are particularly cautioned about the risks posed by dense fog, which can drastically reduce visibility and increase the likelihood of accidents. The use of fog lights and adherence to reduced speed limits are strongly recommended for those traveling during foggy conditions.

A Broader Look at Winter Trends

The ongoing cold wave and foggy conditions in Uttar Pradesh reflect a broader trend seen across northern India. Other states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar, are also experiencing similar winter challenges, emphasizing the need for region-wide preparedness and support.

Experts have noted that the increasing intensity of cold waves in recent years could be attributed to changes in global climate patterns. These shifts are making winters harsher and more unpredictable in various parts of the country.

As Uttar Pradesh endures this double assault of cold waves and dense fog, residents must stay vigilant and take steps to ensure their safety. The IMD’s yellow alert serves as a timely reminder of the unpredictable nature of winter, urging communities to come together to weather the storm.
