Weather: Snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir-Himachal, melting begins in North India, fog warning in Odisha

Due to continuous snowfall in the high altitude areas of Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, cold has increased in most areas of North India including Punjab, Haryana. It has also rained in many areas of Himachal. Drizzle has also been recorded at some places in Rajasthan. However, there was some change in the weather pattern on Saturday compared to the day before and a slight increase in the temperature was recorded after the day became sunny. The Meteorological Department has predicted clear weather in the hilly areas on the occasion of Christmas, but has also warned of dense fog in some districts of Odisha on Sunday.
Snowfall occurred in Sinthan Top of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir. Due to this, the Kishtwar-Anantnag road passing through Sinthan Top has been closed as a precautionary measure. Most areas of the Union Territory remained cloudy in the morning and cleared as the day progressed. An increase in minimum temperature was recorded at major places including Srinagar. The minimum temperature was recorded at 1.2 degrees Celsius on Friday night compared to minus 3.3 degrees Celsius the day before. The minimum temperature in Anantnag also remained at 0.2 degrees Celsius, while the day before it had fallen to minus 4.8 degrees Celsius.
Both ends of Atal Tunnel covered with snow
Even though there are no chances of snowfall on Christmas in Himachal Pradesh, there has been snowfall on the higher peaks of the state before this. Both ends of the famous Atal Tunnel Rohtang in the country and the world were covered with snow on Saturday. Due to this, Atal Tunnel has been closed for vehicles. Snowfall occurred in the upper areas of district Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba.
Along the Rohtang Pass, higher peaks including Sissu, Baralacha, Kunjam Pass, Koksar received fresh snowfall in the afternoon. The peaks of Bharmour-Pangi received up to 12.7 cm of fresh snowfall. There has been light drizzle in the lower areas. Due to change in weather, severe cold increased in Kullu, Manali and Lahaul Valley.
Temperature in Fatehpur, Rajasthan is 5.6 degrees
Due to the effect of western disturbance, light rain occurred at different places in Rajasthan during the last 24 hours. However, this did not result in a drop in temperature, rather the night temperature increased by two to four degrees. According to the Meteorological Department, there has been light rain in Bhilwara, Banasthali, Jodhpur and Phalodi, but the weather is expected to remain clear for the next one week. Fatehpur in Sikar district recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius. After this, a temperature of eight degrees Celsius was recorded in Sangaria of Hanumangarh.
Cold increased in Odisha also
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy fog in 14 districts of Odisha including Puri, Ganjam, Kalahandi and Korapat on Sunday. State Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu has asked all the District Magistrates to remain alert. The severity of cold has also increased in the state. G Udayagiri was the coldest in the state and the minimum temperature was recorded at 5.8 degrees Celsius.
Haryana: Chances of drizzle
There was widespread fog in Haryana on Saturday morning. Due to the effect of clouds, there has been a slight increase in the minimum temperature. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of light drizzle at some places on Sunday. Anticipating increasing cold, the state government has announced winter vacation in all government and private schools from January 1 to 15.
