The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday in East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, predicting light to moderate rain.
The Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country six days ahead of time. Due to its effect, it is raining heavily in Gujarat and the northeastern states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday in East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, predicting light to moderate rain.
According to the Meteorological Department, Orange Alert has been issued for North Bengal, Sikkim, North Eastern states, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. There is a crisis in Junagadh in Gujarat and the dams and rivers are in spate. The Badrinath highway remained closed for 12 hours, leaving 10,000 passengers stranded.
IMD senior scientist Naresh Kumar said, as far as the southwest monsoon is concerned, it has reached the entire country on July 2 instead of the normal time of July 8. He said that the monsoon has been particularly active in the northeastern states. There will be light to moderate rain in Delhi-NCR for the next four to five days. There are chances of heavy to very heavy rains in the northeastern states for the next five days. It will rain heavily in Meghalaya for the next two days.
Next five days heavy for Uttarakhand
"Heavy to very heavy rains may occur in Uttarakhand for the next four to five days and light to moderate rain is expected in other areas," Kumar said. There has been some respite from the heavy rains lashing Mumbai for the last one week and most areas recorded less rainfall on Sunday. Scattered to moderate rains are likely over Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Ghats for the next three-four days.
Shah talks to Gujarat CM, assures help
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday and inquired about the situation arising out of the rains. Shah tweeted, teams of NDRF and SDRF as well as the local administration are helping people in the affected areas. The Central and State Governments stand with the people of the State in this hour of difficulty. The state has recorded an average of 32 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Valsad's Dharampur taluka receiving the highest rainfall of 234 mm.
NDRF teams deployed in flood affected areas
The IMD said that the monsoon has now become active over the entire country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of the country during the next few days. Heavy rains continue in Gujarat. Junagadh's Vanthali Ojat Viar Dam has overflowed. Many drains including the Ambika river are also overflowing. Heavy rains lashed the northern coastal areas of the state, inundating low-lying areas and creating a flood-like situation. NDRF and SDRF teams have been pressed into relief and rescue operations in the affected districts. Due to the rain, many roads have been washed away and due to this the connectivity of hundreds of villages has been lost.
