West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Urges Swift Justice in RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee demands swift justice in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, urging CBI to expedite the investigation and punishment.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a stern directive to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the aftermath of the horrific rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Chief Minister, in a public statement on August 15, 2024, emphasized the urgency of the matter and demanded that the CBI complete its investigation and ensure the hanging of the guilty by Sunday, August 18, 2024.
“Within Sunday (18th August), CBI has to facilitate hanging of the guilty and complete the entire probe. Our Kolkata Police has completed 90% of the probe,” Banerjee declared, underscoring her government’s commitment to securing justice for the victim. Her statement comes amid widespread public outrage and protests across the state, with demands for swift and stringent action against those responsible for the heinous crime.
The case, which has sent shockwaves through West Bengal and the entire nation, involves the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. The incident has sparked a massive outcry, leading to protests by doctors, medical students, and citizens, who are demanding justice and stricter security measures in medical institutions.
The Chief Minister’s call for expedited action by the CBI reflects the growing frustration and anger among the public. The Kolkata Police, according to Banerjee, has already completed 90% of the investigation, and the transfer of the case to the CBI was ordered by the Calcutta High Court to ensure an impartial and thorough probe.
Following the High Court’s directive, the CBI took over the investigation and dispatched a specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi to assist in the case. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, has already been brought to the CBI office at CGO Complex in Kolkata for further interrogation. The CBI’s involvement is seen as a crucial step in bringing the perpetrators to justice and restoring public confidence in the legal system.
Chief Minister Banerjee’s demand for a swift resolution highlights the government’s recognition of the case’s sensitivity and the need for prompt action. “The people of West Bengal and the medical fraternity are watching closely. We cannot allow such an atrocity to go unpunished,” she stated, reinforcing her commitment to justice.
The RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case has also prompted nationwide attention, with the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) announcing a nationwide shutdown of OPD services in protest against the incident. Doctors and medical students across the country have expressed solidarity with their colleagues in West Bengal, calling for stronger protective measures for healthcare professionals.
As the investigation progresses, all eyes are on the CBI to deliver a comprehensive and conclusive report by the Chief Minister’s deadline. The outcome of this case is expected to have far-reaching implications, not only for the medical community but also for the broader issue of women’s safety and justice in India.
