The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported this Friday that she awaits "the deportation" of the Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. so that he can serve his "sentence" in Mexico, after his arrest in the United States and the confirmation of the Attorney General’s Office General of the Mexican Republic (FGR) of an arrest warrant for organized crime and arms trafficking.

“It is an arrest warrant that begins the investigation file in 2019, the arrest warrant is granted by a judge until 2023 (…) It is expected that there may be a deportation and that the sentence will be served in Mexico,” explained the Mexican president at her daily press conference.

Sheinbaum explained that “she was not aware of the case” until she contacted the Attorney General of the Republic of Mexico, Alejandro Gertz Manero, who confirmed “the investigation is linked to organized crime.”

She also argued that “the arrest warrant could not be served because (Chávez Jr.) was in the United States for a good part of the time,” which is why “his deportation to Mexico is being sought.”

Sheinbaum mentioned that there is still no set date for the arrival of the legendary Julio’s son César Chávez to the country, since the process has “specific protocols” that the FGR will be monitoring.

This response by the president comes after the United States government announced the arrest of the well-known boxer, who is accused of participating in organized crime and arms trafficking linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

“This affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, with an active arrest warrant for trafficking in arms, ammunition, and explosives, was arrested by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” said the Undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Tricia McLaughlin, in a statement.

The athlete legally entered the United States in August 2023 with a visa valid until February 2024.

Two months after the end of his visa, Chávez Jr. applied for permanent residency in the country, based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen, also linked to the Sinaloa Cartel through a previous relationship with the now-deceased son of notorious cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.”

In December 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services declared him “a serious threat to public safety,” though it was later determined his case was not a priority.

However, after multiple fraudulent statements in his application to become a legal permanent resident, it was determined he was in the country illegally and could be deported on June 27, 2025,” the statement said.
