Diwali Weather/Cyclone Sitrang: The festival of Diwali is being celebrated all over the country today, but in some states the rain can spoil the festival. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rain in some coastal parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday. The Meteorological Department estimates that Cyclone Sitarang can wreak havoc in some states. The deep pressure over the Bay of Bengal has turned into a cyclone on Sunday evening. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of it taking the form of a severe cyclonic storm before crossing the Bangladesh coast on the morning of 25 October. Thailand has named this cyclone as 'Sitrang'.
According to the Meteorological Department i.e. IMD, the cyclone is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm on Monday i.e. today, with wind speed reaching 90 to 100 kmph to 110 kmph. The Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains in the coastal districts of West Bengal and heavy rains in the north coastal Odisha. At 5.30 pm on Sunday, the cyclone was 580 km south of Sagar Island in West Bengal and 740 km south-southwest of Barisal in Bangladesh.
Light to moderate rain till Wednesday morning
Sanjeev Bandopadhyay, deputy director general of the Regional Meteorological Center in Kolkata, said it would primarily affect the Sundarbans spread over West Bengal and Bangladesh as tidal waves are likely to rise to a height of six meters due to the twin effect of weather conditions and new moon. The cyclone can knock between Tincona Island and Sandvip in Bangladesh on Tuesday morning. He said that due to the deep pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, the districts of South Bengal may receive light to moderate rains till Wednesday morning.

Monsoon may have returned from Odisha, but due to the effect of a possible cyclone to form over the Bay of Bengal in the state, heavy rains are expected on October 24 and 25. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh on the day of Diwali and Govardhan Puja. During October 24 to 26, the department has expressed the possibility of heavy rains in Assam and Meghalaya while during 24-26 October in Mizoram and Tripura.
