The Supreme Court believes that religious conversion is a serious issue and should not be given a political colour. In fact, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, demanding strict action against forced conversions by greed. While hearing this petition, the Supreme Court has sought response from Attorney General R Venkataramani in this matter. It has been demanded in the petition that there should be a ban on religious conversion by intimidation, greed or by giving various benefits.

A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice CT Ravikumar told Attorney General R Venkataramani that we want to find out if conversions are taking place by force or greed and what should we do if this is happening? and what should be done to improve it. Center should help in this matter. 

Senior advocate P. Wilson, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, termed the petition as politically motivated. He insisted that there was no question of such conversions in Tamil Nadu. On this, the Supreme Court bench objected and said that "Don't try to divert the court hearing to other matters. We are worried about the whole country if it is happening in your state then it is bad and if it is not It is a good thing if it is. Don't see it as targeting a state. Don't make it political". 

Let us tell you that advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay had filed a petition in the Supreme Court. In which a demand was made to direct the Central and State Governments to take strict steps against fraudulent or forceful religious conversion. Recently, the Supreme Court had directed the Center to take strict steps on this serious issue, stating that forceful religious conversion is a threat to the security of the country. The Gujarat government had enacted a law making the permission of the District Magistrate mandatory before conversion for marriage. However, the Gujarat High Court had stayed this law. The Gujarat government had approached the Supreme Court to get the stay removed. During this, the Gujarat government had said that freedom of religion does not include the right to convert.

It has been said in the petition that forced conversion is the problem of the whole country and it needs immediate attention. In the petition, the Justice Commission has also been demanded to prepare a report and a bill, in which incidents of religious conversion can be controlled by intimidation or by giving greed. Now the Supreme Court will hear this matter on 7th February.
