Chhath Puja preparations underway in Patna as devotees gather to purchase essentials for the sacred festival.

The streets of Patna are bustling with activity as residents prepare for Chhath Puja, one of the most revered festivals in Bihar. In the days leading up to the festival, markets are crowded with devotees purchasing various essentials needed for the elaborate rituals associated with Chhath Puja. This year, as in previous years, the demand for traditional items, fruits, and puja materials has surged, adding vibrancy and energy to the local markets.

Chhath Puja, known for its profound significance in Bihar and across North India, is a time when devotees show their reverence to the Sun God, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya, the goddess of well-being and prosperity. The festival involves several days of fasting, rituals, and offerings made by devotees on the riverbanks during sunrise and sunset. For many, it’s a period of spiritual devotion, family bonding, and community participation, and the bustling markets are a vital part of the festival’s preparations.

Markets Abuzz with Shoppers for Puja Essentials

The vibrant atmosphere in Patna’s markets is palpable as people from across the city converge to buy items traditionally associated with Chhath Puja. Vendors are busy showcasing an array of items, including bamboo baskets, earthen diyas, and colorful sarees—each of which plays a symbolic role in the Chhath rituals. The shopping frenzy has brought a much-welcome boost to local businesses, with stall owners delighted by the surge in demand.

Ranjit Singh, a vendor at Patna’s Hathwa Market, shared his excitement about the increased foot traffic. “Chhath Puja is always a busy time for us. The number of people coming out to shop has grown every year, and we’ve worked hard to ensure we have all the essentials that people need. From fruits to sugarcane and clay items, everything is in high demand,” he said.

Traditional Items in High Demand

Among the many items being bought, some are considered essential to the observance of Chhath Puja. These include bamboo baskets, which are used to carry the offerings, and clay diyas, which are lit during the evening rituals. The festival’s unique offerings include fruits like bananas, coconuts, and sugarcane, all of which are symbolic and considered auspicious for the rituals. Fresh vegetables and ginger are also commonly seen in the hands of shoppers as they collect items to prepare the traditional dishes eaten during the festival.

Local artisans and farmers from nearby villages have joined the market hustle, bringing their wares directly to city residents. Sunita Devi, a villager selling bamboo baskets, noted, “Chhath Puja is an important festival for us as well, as it brings income opportunities. Many people come to buy our baskets, which are handmade, and it makes me proud to see our products as part of such a beautiful tradition.”

The Significance of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is deeply rooted in the cultural and religious practices of Bihar and other parts of North India. It is celebrated over four days, each filled with unique rituals. On the first day, called Nahay Khay, devotees purify themselves and prepare for the fast. The second day, Kharna, involves a day-long fast followed by an evening offering. The third and fourth days are marked by elaborate offerings made to the Sun God, both at sunset and sunrise, with devotees standing in water as they pray for prosperity and blessings.

Devotees believe that Chhath Puja holds immense power to fulfill wishes and bring harmony into their lives. The rituals are known for their rigor, as the fasting and prayers involve intense dedication and discipline. This festival is unique because it doesn’t involve idol worship; instead, devotees offer natural elements, including fruits, water, and sunlight, in their prayers.

Patna’s Streets Come Alive with Festival Spirit

Patna’s riverbanks, including the famous Ganga Ghat, are preparing for the influx of devotees who will gather to perform rituals during sunrise and sunset. The local administration has been working to ensure the safety and cleanliness of these sites, deploying additional personnel to manage the crowds. Authorities have also taken measures to control traffic, ensure sanitation, and provide medical assistance at key ghats to make the celebration smooth and safe for all participants.

In addition to Patna’s markets, other public spaces are also gearing up for the celebrations. Many families are setting up temporary shelters near the ghats, while community organizations are decorating public areas with traditional lamps and banners. The Chhath Puja celebrations foster a strong sense of community, with people from all backgrounds coming together to participate in or observe the festival’s sacred rituals.

Spiritual Devotion and Family Unity

For many families in Bihar, Chhath Puja represents a time to reconnect with spiritual values and familial bonds. Families gather to prepare offerings, cook traditional dishes, and participate in prayers. The festival holds a special significance for women, who are often the primary participants in the rituals and fasting. As mothers, daughters, and sisters take part in the puja, they honor their cultural heritage and pass down traditions to the next generation.

Seema Devi, a resident of Patna, shared her thoughts on the festival’s importance to her family. “Chhath Puja is a reminder of our roots and values. It’s about respecting nature and being grateful. My children are learning about our culture, and it’s a beautiful way for us to bond. Every year, we look forward to this time,” she expressed.

Anticipation and Preparation for Chhath Puja

As the days draw closer to Chhath Puja, the atmosphere in Patna is one of anticipation and devotion. People’s eagerness to participate in the festival has infused the city with a festive energy. The crowded markets, adorned with colorful stalls and echoing with friendly chatter, reflect the spirit of Chhath Puja—a celebration of nature, faith, and family.

With the preparations well underway and the entire city embracing the festival spirit, Patna is ready to welcome Chhath Puja with open arms. The local government’s efforts, the devotion of the people, and the thriving markets all contribute to a memorable festival that holds a special place in the hearts of Bihar’s people. As devotees gather along the riverbanks to honor the Sun God, Chhath Puja promises to be a profound and joyous occasion, filled with blessings and unity.
