The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Tuesday the 'Michoacan Plan for Peace and Justice', a comprehensive strategy to address the violence in the western state of the country, after the murder of the mayor Carlos Manzo Rodriguez, from Uruapan, was murdered on November 1st.

“Our commitment is to get to the truth and do justice in the case of the cowardly murder of Carlos Manzo,” she stated during her daily press conference from the National Palace.

The governor reported that, since Sunday, the presence of the National Guard has been reinforced in Michoacan, particularly in Uruapan, and announced that the plan will be built “from the ground up,” with the participation of communities, local authorities, and social sectors.

“Michoacan is a state with history, strength, and dignity. His cowardly murder (of Carlos Manzo) hurts not only his family and his community, but all of Michoacan and the country,” Sheinbaum said.

The president detailed that the plan includes three pillars.

The first, focused on security and justice, will strengthen federal and local forces, along with the creation of a specialized prosecutor's office for crimes. high-impact initiatives and bi-weekly security meetings with the federal cabinet.

Secondly, it refers to economic development with justice, which will include social security and living wages for day laborers, investment in rural infrastructure, and agreements with the productive sector.

Finally, it focuses on education and culture for peace, with school, sports, and arts programs.

“We are going to restore tranquility with justice, take care of our communities, and demonstrate that peace can be built from the ground up, with dignity and hope,” the mayor affirmed.

Sheinbaum indicated that her cabinet will meet this week with community representatives, traditional authorities, churches, and productive sectors to finalize the plan's content.which will be presented “at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.”

“Peace is not imposed by force, it is built with people, with communities, and with the daily work of those who love their land,” he concluded.

The murder of Manzo after a public Day of the Dead event in Uruapan on November 1st has generated strong outrage in Michoacan, where protests and clashes between demonstrators and police forces have been reported.
