Mexico holds a hard battle with the United States for young talent
Andres Lillini said that Mexico is in a tough battle with the United States to attract young talent on American soil and enrich the Tricolor
The Mexican national team continues working to attract as much talent as possible with Mexican roots throughout the world, but especially in the United States, revealed the director of minor national teams for the Tricolor, the Argentine Andres Lillini, who highlighted that the dispute with the Americans in this area is very strong.
Interviewed by various media outlets, Lillini agreed that the results so far are encouraging, having attracted interest in the Mexican team's project from 52 players, of which 23 have already participated in the different categories that make up the Mexican national team project.
Without giving names, but with the certainty that the 26 trips he has made throughout Europe, South America, Central America, and several cities in the United States have been worth it since he took control of the minor teams on May 24, 2023.
Especially because on the map of the national team there are elements such as the children of Walter "Lorito" Jiménez, Martínez Dupuy himself, Mateo Levy, as well as other cases such as Matheus Reis from Fluminense of Brazil, Obed Vargas, or Da'vian Kimbrough, the young forward who has a Hawaiian father but a Mexican mother.
"When I arrived, the first thing I set out to do was to "Every Mexican who is eligible and plays well had to play for Mexico, and wherever they were, we were going to have to go and find them. If you have good scouting, everything is easier because you have good players. So, a good Mexican has to play for the national team, or at least make the maximum effort on our part to be chosen," said the South American coach.
Family conviction
Andres Lillini commented that the key to getting players to consider or analyze playing for Mexico starts with reaching out to their parents, to their family, to highlight their love for Mexico. "I make the first contact with the parents; everything is born from the love they have for Mexico. Or from their father, their mother, their grandfather, and they choose us, and that ends up defending us a lot. They really appreciate that we explain to them what the project and the process for their son will be.”
Project for the 2030 World Cup
The former Necaxa and Pumas coach assured that the goal of this project is to nurture the Mexican national team for the 2030 World Cup: “The ideal is that this entire generation, the 2005, 2006, 2007, will have an impact on the 2030 National Team. They will be 25 years old, a very good age to play in a World Cup. So, this category that is going to play in the U-20 World Cup this year, is the next one that in 2028 will compete in the Los Angeles Olympic Games, the objective we present is to have an impact in 2030.”
The dispute with the United States is for twelve players
To conclude, he said that the biggest dispute, mainly with the United States, is for twelve players, especially after they lost players like Alejandro Zendejas and Diego Luna, who is currently standing out with the Stars and Stripes team.
“The fight is for 10, 12 players between all the national teams. We all want the same ones, the issue is convincing the father that we are a good option, because of what we can give him as a national team. I can't promise a young man that he will play in the senior team, because I'm not the one who decides that. But I can tell you that we accompany them weekly, we watch their games, we follow all the areas and that makes the father feel good, that the boy is being followed by us and that is what we want," he concluded. a follow-up of all areas and that makes the father feel good, that the child is being followed by us and that is what we want,” he concluded.
