North India experiences heavy rain followed by a dip in temperature, while dense fog and low visibility warnings persist. Updates on Delhi-NCR and South India weather.

IMD predicts a mixed weather pattern with rainfall, fog, and dropping temperatures across various regions.

Rain in Delhi-NCR and North India

As expected, Delhi-NCR and other parts of North India experienced significant rainfall over the past couple of days. The downpour on Wednesday evening and early Thursday brought relief to some but also set the stage for colder days ahead. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s Safdarjung and Palam observatories recorded rainfall ranging between 4 to 10 millimeters.

While Thursday’s rain temporarily increased temperatures, IMD forecasts suggest a sharp drop with Friday’s minimum temperature expected to hover around 6–7°C. The rain also heightened atmospheric moisture, leading to dense fog blanketing the capital city on Friday morning. The IMD has issued a low-visibility alert for Saturday and Sunday.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

The respite from rain might be short-lived as a new western disturbance is brewing over northern Rajasthan and Haryana. This system could bring light rain to Delhi-NCR between January 21 and 23. However, there’s good news for Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The IMD predicts clear skies for the day, albeit with chilly winds and moisture adding to the cold conditions.

Fog and Cold Wave Conditions

Despite the rainfall clearing some fog temporarily, the dense fog is expected to return. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are particularly vulnerable to low visibility during the night and early morning hours. In Himachal Pradesh, cold day conditions prevail, with temperatures dropping significantly, creating a challenging environment for residents.

Rainfall Updates from South India

Meanwhile, the southern states are bracing for heavy rain due to a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea near South Kerala. IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rain in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next 24 hours. Specifically, Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall between January 19 and 20. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will witness similar conditions on January 18 and 19.

The weather department has advised residents of these areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during the rain. The rainfall might disrupt daily activities but could also replenish water reservoirs and aid agriculture.

Skymet Weather’s 24-Hour Prediction

Skymet Weather has also shared its forecast for the next 24 hours:

  • Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh may experience light to moderate rain and snow.
  • The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep are likely to witness light to moderate rain.
  • Pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh will remain under dense to very dense fog during the night and early morning.
  • Some areas of Himachal Pradesh might face cold day conditions.
  • Ground frost is expected in parts of Northeast India between January 16 and 17.

Precautionary Measures

As weather conditions remain unpredictable, authorities urge citizens to take necessary precautions:

  • In fog-prone areas, avoid driving at night or during early mornings to reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Keep warm clothing handy to combat the cold wave in northern regions.
  • In southern states, residents are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid venturing near water bodies.
  • Farmers in South India should take measures to protect their crops from excessive rain and flooding.

As North and South India face contrasting weather patterns, residents are urged to stay informed and prepared. Whether it’s the chilly fog of Delhi or the heavy rains of Kerala, weather conditions serve as a reminder of nature’s power and unpredictability. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor the evolving weather scenarios across the country.
