Political Round: Families of immigrants ask the politicians for action
They feel alone in their fight to find and defend their loved ones arrested in ICE raids

Almost a month after the violent immigration raids began in Los Angeles with ICE agents, equipped with high-caliber weapons and the support of the Civil Guard and the Marines, the families of the detainees feel that their voices are not being heard.
To the misfortune of seeing that their loved ones have been confined in detention centers in conditions inhumane, is compounded by the deliberate blockage of their legal defense.
Relatives of detained immigrants report that they are brought from one place to another in their desperate search to know where they have been taken, and when they do, access by telephone is expensive and limited; even visits are denied.
Immigration attorneys themselves have faced unprecedented barriers to locating, seeing, and defending their clients.
Amid this drama, families do not feel supported by politicians and those in power. There are many declarations, they say, but little action.
A woman said she called the offices of Congressmen Maxine Waters and Ted Lieu to ask them to help her locate her uncle; she contacted Governor Newsom's office, and even the Consulate of El Salvador. Everyone invariably responded that it was a federal matter.
We have not heard the voice of former Vice President Kamala Harris. She was once a friend of immigrants. We haven't seen her participate as she did when she was campaigning for the Senate. Nor have we seen the Democratic candidates for governor of California march.
Could it be that they're afraid of Trump? They're afraid he'll sue them like he sued our nervous Mayor Karen Bass. They're worried they'll be jailed like union leader David Huerta, who emerged so terrified from prison that he refused to speak to the press about the issue again. The national executive committee of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has strictly banned him from giving interviews. The serious charges against him for allegedly obstructing immigration enforcement have led to him being muzzled from speaking to the media. He might 'put his foot in it'; if he's found guilty, he could face a long prison sentence.
Or are our politicians afraid of getting a beating like Senator Alex Padilla got when he dared to crash Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem's press conference?
Although we've seen many bombastic statements and the announcement of bills to prevent abuses against immigrants, families don't feel fully supported.
We know it's not easy with a bully leader like Donald Trump, but people feel very alone and on the verge of a nervous breakdown when a loved one is detained and they can't find them for days or even weeks; Even more so when they learn of the tortured confinement they are being held in, and when even lawyers are denied access to legal assistance. So it's time for our politicians to stop paying lip service and show their support for the immigrant community with actions. Otherwise, those leaders who claim, "Only the people save the people," will not be mistaken.
