Guillermo Ochoa accepts that it will be easy for us to leave the Mexican team
“Memo” acknowledged that the 2026 World Cup will be his last concentration with El Tri. Ochoa will have problems beating the national team
Guillermo Ochoa is one of the greatest references in Mexican soccer. The AEL Limassol goalkeeper acknowledged that the 2026 World Cup could be his last major tournament with the Mexican team. “Memo” accepts that it will not be easy to say goodbye to El Tri.
The former Águilas del América goalkeeper was included in the World Cup squad for the sixth time in his career. Guillermo Ochoa faces this call with great enthusiasm, but also with nostalgia as he describes it as “the last one.”
“This is going to be the last concentration, I am excited as if it were the first, excited to be as always in the national team, which is the most important thing and looking forward to being there,” said Ochoa in statements reported by Milenio.
Guillermo Ochoa acknowledged that it will not be easy to step aside from the Mexican team. “Memo” got used to the pressure and what it means to be concentrated with the national team.
The 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper assured that he has been mentally preparing to leave the Mexican team once and for all. It is not a simple task. A World Cup at home is the ideal setting to close a successful career with El Tri.
“It has its difficult part because there have been too many years in the national team, I don't see myself having a career without that, so it is not easy, but I have been preparing this final stage with a lot of awareness and a lot of calm, I am ready, I have given everything,” he explained.
Guillermo Ochoa with Mexico
“Memo” has been part of the Mexican national team's squad since 2005. Since then Guillermo Ochoa has saved 153 games with the El Tri shirt. During more than 13,500 minutes on the field, “Memo” has conceded 154 goals, but has kept a clean sheet in 63 games.
Guillermo Ochoa's debut with the Mexican national team was on December 13, 2005. On that occasion, “Memo” played 45 minutes in Mexico's 0-2 victory over Hungary. More than 20 years later, Ochoa continues to represent the Mexican flag. “That is the most beautiful thing, that people take away good memories, that they are excited to see me,” he concluded.
