Luis Suarez, wrapped in controversy after the Leagues Cup final
The Leagues Cup final between the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami ended in an ugly fight
Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez once again placed himself at the center of controversy. The Inter Miami forward spat a member of the Seattle Sounders coaching staff during a brawl at the end of the Leagues Cup final at Lumen Field, which ended with a resounding 3-0 defeat for the Florida team.
Apple TV cameras clearly captured the moment when the Uruguayan striker, upset after a verbal altercation, spit at one of the opposing bench members.
The incident occurred in midfield, where several players from both teams began pushing each other once the referee blew the final whistle. Among those involved was Spaniard Sergio Busquets, who tried to contain the tension.
Reactions from both benches
At a press conference, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that he had not directly witnessed the incident. "Nobody likes it when there are these kinds of actions at the end of the match. When there's a reaction, it could be a provocation, but I don't know what happened," the Argentine declared, attempting to distance himself from the controversy. For his part, Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer tried to downplay the fight, although he made it clear that his opponents' attitude reflected their frustration. "My reaction is that unfortunately this will take some attention away from a great performance by the Sounders. I can take it as a compliment that their players were frustrated, but that shouldn't be the story of the game," he told the media. The American coach emphasized that what was truly important was his team's performance in the final. "The story of the game isn't what happened next; the story of this game is the Sounders. I had a moment with Messi on the pitch and said, 'I'm sorry.' Mascherano is a great coach, and before the game he congratulated me on the team. Beckham waited for us in the locker room to congratulate us; that's class. Jose Mas spoke to me and told me we have a good team. These are people who are at the top of this sport. That's the story," he added.
