NFL Week 16: Steelers make history, 49ers dream big, and Cowboys extend their drought
Records, comebacks, and disappointments marked a key week on the road to the NFL playoffs
The Pittsburgh Steelers' record for most consecutive unbeaten seasons, the San Francisco 49ers' climb in the NFC standings, and the Dallas Cowboys' 30-year Super Bowl drought dominated the spotlight is on Week 16 of the NFL, one of the most crucial weeks on the road to the postseason.
Pittsburgh Steelers Make NFL History
The Steelers, who defeated the Detroit Lions 29-24 last Sunday, broke the NFL record for consecutive undefeated seasons with 22, one more than the Dallas Cowboys accumulated between 1965 and 1985.
In addition, the victory marked Mike Tomlin's 200th win as head coach. At 53, Tomlin became the third youngest coach to reach 200 wins, trailing only Hall of Famers Curly Lambeau and Don Shula. With two games remaining, the mission for the team led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is to secure first place in the AFC North with wins against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, results that would also guarantee them a spot in the NFL playoffs. The San Francisco 49ers also made headlines after their resounding 48-27 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last Monday. The result allowed them to climb to second place in the NFC West and opened the possibility of finishing the regular season as the best team in the National Conference. The 49ers spent virtually the entire season in third place in their division, but the Los Angeles Rams' loss to the Seattle Seahawks changed the landscape and aligned the stars for San Francisco. Now, the 49ers depend on beating the Chicago Bears and the Seahawks again in the final two weeks to secure the top spot in the NFC and play the playoffs at home, with the possibility of playing Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium.
Dallas Cowboys and a Historic Drought Continues
The most disappointing news of NFL Week 16 was for the Dallas Cowboys, who fell 34-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
The hardest part for the so-called “America's Team” is that the elimination confirmed their streak of not reaching an NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl will reach 30 years,an unprecedented drought for the most popular and one of the most valuable teams in the NFL.
The last time the Cowboys played in an NFC Championship Game was in the 1995 season, when they defeated the Green Bay Packers 38-27.
That victory took them to Super Bowl XXX, where they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17.
Jacksonville Jaguars, the surprise of week 16
A special mention in this week 16 of the NFL goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who defeated the Denver Broncos, considered the best team in the AFC, 34-20.
It was Jacksonville's sixth consecutive victory, a streak that allowed them to take over first place in the AFC South and put them in pursuit of the Broncos and New England Patriots for the overall conference lead, a key position for hosting the NFL playoffs.
