DOJ asks to suspend California law prohibiting federal agents from wearing masks
Federal authorities seek to overturn law signed by Governor Newsom prohibiting federal agents from wearing face coverings during operations in California
The Department of Justice (DOJ) asked a judge to suspend a California law that prohibits federal agents, including immigration agents, from wearing masks while on active duty in the state.
DOJ lawyers argued Wednesday that the provision approved by the California authorities interferes with federal enforcement operations.
The provision, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 20, 2025, prohibits federal immigration agents and other law enforcement officers from covering their faces.
