Greg Abbott says an immigrant attacked ICE agents with his vehicle
Civil organizations in Texas accused the governor of promoting a narrative that criminalizes immigrants
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said an immigrant attacked a group of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with his vehicle, injuring one officer, after an incident in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio.
According to ICE, the incident occurred on Tuesday when federal agents intercepted a car during an operation. A video later released by the agency shows officers blocking the vehicle's exit with patrol cars positioned in front and behind. The footage shows agents surrounding the car, banging on the windows, and ordering the driver to get out while pointing firearms. Abbott reacted to the video via his X account, where he called the driver an "illegal alien criminal" and asserted that the man rammed ICE vehicles, insulting one of the agents. The governor called for the arrest of those who, he said, obstruct the enforcement of immigration laws and endanger officers and civilians. However, the publicly released footage does not clearly show the moment the vehicle directly impacts the agents. Toward the end of the video, the driver gets out of the car, throws himself to the ground, and is arrested without any direct blows being struck against the officers.
No Police Report and Conflicting Accounts
ICE reported that one of the agents was injured and taken to a hospital, although no official details about his condition have been released. The San Antonio Police Department stated that it did not receive any emergency calls related to this incident, and there is no public police report to date.
Federal sources identified the agent involved as Miguel Vergara, ICE Field Office Director, who allegedly suffered neck injuries. Todd Lyons, the agency's director, defended his subordinates' actions: "These are constant attacks like this; this has to stop," he stated, emphasizing that the FBI and Homeland Security are already investigating the case as obstruction of justice.
The incident occurs within a context of growing tension over immigration operations. In the last week,The death of a woman in Minneapolis after being shot by an ICE agent during an operation reignited criticism of the use of force by federal authorities.
Civil organizations in Texas accused the governor of promoting a narrative that criminalizes immigrants. Gabriel Rosales, of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) in Texas, pointed out that this type of rhetoric “only deepens fear in communities” and does not address the root causes of migration.
For its part, the administration of President Donald Trump maintains that agents face a surge in threats and acts of violence, which it attributes to opposition to its anti-immigrant policies, while raids and operations continue in various cities across the country.
