PM Modi requests to Stay Home and Stay Safe. This is the only way to save everyone.

Will no longer watch HD videos on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Hotstar

HD or Ultra HD content will not be accessible through mobile networks in these 21 days of lock down through online streaming platforms of these companies.

26th March, 2020

Video streaming service platforms Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Tiktok have discontinued HD and Ultra HD video transmission through their platforms. Due to coronavirus the complete lock down has been done in the country, due to which these companies have taken this decision. HD or Ultra HD content will not be accessible through mobile networks in these 21 days of lock down through online streaming platforms of these companies. Sony, Google, Facebook, Viacom18, MX Player, Hotstar, Zee, Tiktok, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video have decided to transmit Standard Definition (SD) content by April 14 to remove load on cellular networks or mobile networks.

All these companies have issued a joint statement saying that we have decided to take this decision with immediate effect keeping in mind the interest of the national consumer. During these 21 days, users will get 480p resolution video streaming only on SD quality through mobile network. However, users will continue to receive HD and Ultra HD quality content through broadband connections and Wi-Fi networks.

The companies said in their joint statement that COAI, a unit of the telecom industry, had urged the mobile consumer to reduce their streaming quality to maintain the data network smoothly. This decision has been taken in view of the high-resolution video transmission, which was under tremendous pressure on cellular networks and infrastructure. According to COAI, there has been a 20 to 30 percent increase in data consumption in the last few days. Now, while the entire country is locked down, this data consumption can increase further. Because of which users can face problems like network congestion.

Video streaming quality through the OTT platform has been reduced in European countries also due to Coronavirus not only in India. These companies also said in their joint statement that the digital industry is constantly trying to accept the challenge and continue to get mobile service. So that people do not have to face connectivity problem in talking to their loved ones.
