The 2027 Grammy Awards are shaping up to become an unprecedented edition, and proof of this is the addition of 5 new categories to the 95 already existing, including “Best Latin Song” and “Best Asian Pop Performance.”
According to an announcement published on the website of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the edition scheduled for February 2027 will include five new categories that will be proof of the “extraordinary growth seen in music.”
Regarding the latter, the criteria is clear: the songs where Spanish predominates with more than 51% of the lyrics will be awarded.
This new category joins the existing ones that pay tribute to Latin artists, which are: “Best Latin Pop Album”, “Best Mexican Music Album (including Tejano)”, “Best Latin Jazz Album”, “Best Latin or Alternative Rock Album” and “Best Tropical Latin Music Album”.
For his part, director of The Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., said he was excited that the next edition of the acclaimed awards ceremony reflects the great scope that various musical genres have acquired.
“The changes made by members of the Recording Academy speak to the breadth of today's music industry and the many genres, crafts and creators that shape it,” he said in a statement.
Along with this addition of categories, the Academy also announced a new process that will allow experts from various genres to vote for up to 15 categories. Additionally, there was an update to the “Best New Artist” and “Best Historical Album” category criteria, as well as album eligibility and songwriter rewards.
