Cruz Azul eliminates Chivas and advances to the semifinals
The 0-0 draw at the Akron forces Chivas to win and gives Cruz Azul a slight advantage due to their position in the standings
The first chapter of this Liga MX quarterfinal series between Cruz Azul and Chivas ended goalless, but with a clear feeling: nothing is decided. The 0-0 draw at Estadio Akron left the tie wide open, promising tension until the final minute in a sold-out Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Cruz Azul, solid for almost the entire Apertura 2025, maintains the advantage thanks to its position in the standings; while Chivas travels needing a win. Cruz Azul arrived at this stage with doubts, after having fought for the top spot for much of the tournament. The defeat against Pumas in the last match was a tough blow emotionally, and the injury to their starting goalkeeper forced changes in personnel and routines at a crucial moment. Even so, Nicolas Larcamon's team showed balance in the first leg, avoiding unnecessary risks and betting on the return leg at home. Chivas, forced to go for the win. On the other hand, Chivas arrives with a different momentum. They closed the regular season with a positive streak, led by the goals and confidence of Armando Gonzalez, which allowed them to enter directly into the Liguilla (playoffs). At the Akron Stadium, they were looking to strike first and take advantage of playing at home, but a lack of finishing in the final third prevented them from taking the lead. The match had moments of intensity, although without too many clear scoring opportunities. Chivas created several chances, but none managed to seriously trouble the Cruz Azul defense. Knowing that a draw would benefit them, La Maquina controlled the tempo and stuck to a more conservative strategy. This series is the only one in this round that goes into the second leg scoreless. In the other matchups, the scores have already begun to define the outcome, but here everything remains unchanged. That's why Chivas must win: no matter the difference, any victory will see them through. Cruz Azul, on the other hand, can advance even with a draw thanks to their higher position in the overall standings. In case of a tie after 180 minutes, there will be no extra time or penalties. The position in the standings determines who advances. And that puts Cruz Azul in a favorable position. They can play with the support of their fans, control the tempo, and, if necessary, play a close game that allows them to secure their place in the semifinals without needing a win.
