Luis Enrique will go through the operating room after fracturing his clavicle in an accident
PSG coach to undergo surgery, club remains silent on recovery time
Spanish coach Luis Enrique Martinez suffered a clavicle fracture on Friday after a cycling accident and will require surgery, according to Paris Saint-Germain in an official statement. The coach was immediately taken to the emergency room and is awaiting surgery.
“Paris Saint-Germain expresses its full support to Luis Enrique and wishes him a speedy recovery. The club will provide more information soon,” the club posted on its social media channels.
Uncertainty on the PSG bench
The incident occurred during the international break for the FIFA date, a period that the coach was using to dedicate himself to one of his greatest passions outside of football: cycling. Since his retirement as a player in 2004, Luis Enrique has participated in mountain bike competitions and has shown himself to be an enthusiast of this discipline.
What has not yet been decided is who will lead the team in the upcoming matches. PSG will face Lens in Ligue 1 on Sunday, September 14, and three days later, will make their Champions League debut against Atalanta. The lack of clarity regarding the length of the coach's recovery creates uncertainty ahead of these key matches.
The last time he was seen on the bench was in the 6-3 thrashing of Toulouse, where Joao Neves shone with a hat trick. After that match, the coach stated: "The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible. The first 60 minutes were well controlled. The end of the game was like a preseason match. The opponent has quality. But the result is deserved."
In addition to their strong start to the domestic league, PSG is coming into the match with an encouraging start: they won the European Super Cup against Tottenham and are fresh from finishing as a finalist in the Club World Cup. However, their manager's injury adds a layer of concern just as the season enters its most demanding phase.
