Former Indiana teacher convicted of beating wife to death after suspecting infidelity
The man confessed to the crime during a 911 call and later alleged that he acted after suspecting that she was unfaithful to him.
A former Indiana high school teacher was sentenced to 15 years in prison for hammering his wife to death and admitting to the crime in a 911 call, in a case that authorities initially classified as murder and that ultimately led to a voluntary manslaughter conviction.
The victim was identified as Mary Ogle, 76 years old.
“I killed her,” he said during the 911 call.
According to court records, the crime occurred on January 17, 2025, when Terry Ogle called emergency services to report what happened.
“I killed her,” the then-defendant, 79, told the 911 operator, according to information presented during the judicial process.
When the dispatcher asked if he could try CPR, Ogle responded that “it was too late.”
Upon arriving at the home, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found Mary Ogle lying face up, covered with a blanket and with a serious head injury.
Emergency medical services confirmed his death at the scene.
Officers also found Terry Ogle with a bleeding wound on his left wrist that, according to case documents, appeared to be self-inflicted. He was later taken to a hospital while in police custody.
The accused said he suspected infidelity
Initially, the Prosecutor's Office filed charges of murder. However, the court found him guilty of a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, considering that the incident occurred in the middle of an episode of intense emotional disturbance or “in the heat of the moment,” according to Indiana law.
During interrogations, Ogle stated that the reason for the attack was “a long story” and said that he believed his wife was having an extramarital affair.
"I've been depressed for some time. I think she was having an affair. I lost control," he told investigators, according to information presented at trial.
After the attack, he also sent a text message to his daughter to inform her what happened.
"I'm going to jail. I killed Mary," he wrote, according to records cited during the trial.
Both dedicated their lives to education.
According to local media, both Terry and Mary Ogle developed their professional careers in the educational field.
With the sentence issued by the Marion County Court, the case is resolved in the criminal court, after the accused recognized from the beginning his responsibility in the death of his wife.
