Applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments may seem simple at first, but many people find that a small mistake can delay their application for weeks or even months. If you are thinking about requesting this benefit or helping a family member do so, knowing the most common mistakes can make the difference between a quick procedure and one full of complications.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) program currently supports about 7.4 million low-income people who are age 65 or older, blind, or living with a disability. In 2026, the maximum monthly payment is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. However, the amount each beneficiary receives depends on factors such as their income, assets and even their housing situation.

1. First know if you really meet the requirements

Before filling out any forms, it is a good idea to review the program rules, as many applications are rejected because people do not meet the income or resource limits established by the SSA.

For example, an individual applicant cannot have resources greater than $2,000, while the limit for a couple is $3,000. These resources consider savings, investments, cash, and some assets, although the primary home and a vehicle used for transportation typically do not count in that calculation.

2. Review your application before submitting it

It may seem like a minor detail, but forgetting medical history, income information or information related to your housing can cause unnecessary delays; That is why it is essential to review the application carefully before submitting it.

Before sending the documentation, take a few minutes to check that all the forms are complete and that the information matches the documents you will submit as backup.

3. Keep copies of everything you deliver

Although many procedures can be done online today, it is always advisable to keep a copy of the application, the documents submitted, and any letters or mail you receive from the SSA.

Having that backup can help you if a document is lost, if you need to check a delivery date or if an error arises during the process. In addition, it makes it easier to follow up on your case without depending solely on the agency's records.

4. Don't ignore letters or calls from Social Security

After you submit the application, the process does not end, the SSA may request additional documents or schedule a medical evaluation to continue analyzing the case.

“If important information is missing, it is critical to respond as soon as possible when the Social Security Administration requests additional documentation or asks to attend an advisory exam, to avoid further delays,” explained Colin Ruggiero, benefits expert and co-founder of DisabilityGuidance.org.

5. If you receive a refusal, there are still options

An initial denial does not necessarily mean that you have lost the benefit, in fact, a significant portion of applicants obtain a favorable response after filing an appeal.

“A large number of applicants end up being approved after an appeal, so don't give up hope if it doesn't happen the first time,” Ruggiero said.

Those who wish to start the SSI process can do so through the Social Security application portal, by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by going to a local SSA office.
