Three inmates who escaped from a jail in Georgia were recaptured in Florida after a multistate manhunt
The three inmates who escaped Monday from a DeKalb County jail in Georgia were apprehended without incident in Miami, Florida
Stevenson Charles, 24; Yusuf Minor, 31; and Naod Yohannes, 25, escaped early Monday morning from the DeKalb County Jail, located in Decatur, a northeast suburb of Atlanta. Following the escape, authorities warned that the inmates were considered dangerous and possibly armed. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a search that extended to other states, with support from the US Marshals Service and regional fugitive task forces. Forced transfer and escape to Florida. During the investigation, agents determined that Stevenson Charles contacted his girlfriend in Florida. Around 2:30 am, a Lyft driver picked up the three fugitives at Minor's girlfriend's home and drove them to an unoccupied address in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Later, authorities determined that the inmates had forced the driver to take them to Florida, following a route toward the Miami area, where Charles's girlfriend was located. Miami Arrest Without Incident: Around 9:30 pm on Monday, investigators located the fugitives at a rented Airbnb in Miramar, Florida. Minutes later, the Broward County Sheriff's Office spotted the getaway vehicle and attempted to stop it. Two of the suspects briefly fled, but finally, at 11:40 pm, all three inmates were apprehended without incident. The Lyft driver was located and received preventative medical attention.
Ongoing Investigation and New Charges
A Lyft spokesperson reported that the company is cooperating with authorities and expressed relief for the driver's safety. Meanwhile, the investigation into the escape continues.
According to the US Marshals Service, Charles had previously been convicted of federal weapons-related crimes; Minor has been serving a life sentence for murder since 2024, and Yohannes was in custody for arson and criminal damage. All three will now face additional charges related to the escape and interstate flight.
