The actor and director, an icon of Hollywood, died along with his wife in an apparent homicide at the age of 78, according to information reported by TMZ
Rob Reiner, the actor who became an influential film director, was found dead along with his wife, Michele Singer, inside their home in Brentwood, California, on December 14. The news, reported by TMZ, indicates that the deaths were an apparent homicide. Reiner was 78 and Singer was 68. According to media sources, both suffered injuries consistent with a bladed weapon. However, they emphasize that the Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) Robbery-Homicide Division is still investigating. Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1947, Reiner was the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner and actress and singer Estelle Lebost. His path in entertainment seemed predetermined, but it was his unique talent that led him to forge a distinctive and celebrated career. From 'Meathead' to acclaimed filmmaker. National fame came to Reiner with his role as Mike 'Meathead' Stivic in the iconic 1970s sitcom 'All in the Family,' created by Norman Lear. The series was a cultural phenomenon and, for five seasons, the number one show on television. For this role, Reiner received five Emmy nominations, winning the award twice.
However, it was behind the camera that Reiner cemented his legacy. After leaving the series in 1978, he embarked on a directing career that would place him among the most respected of his generation. His debut feature, 'This Is Spinal Tap' (1984), a mockumentary about a rock band, became a cult classic and was included in the National Film Registry.
This was followed by a succession of films that defined eras and genres:
A Personal Life Intertwined with His Work
His personal life was often reflected in his work. He was married for a decade to actress and director Penny Marshall, whom he met in Los Angeles. The press called them “the Habsburgs of Hollywood” because of their numerous relatives in the industry. Together they raised Tracy, Marshall's daughter from a previous relationship. They divorced in 1981 but maintained a good relationship until her death in 2018.
It was during the filming of When Harry Met Sally… that Reiner met Michele Singer, who would change his perspective on romance. They married in 1989 and had three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner often included his family in his projects; his mother, Estelle, delivered the famous line “I'll have what she's having” in When Harry Met Sally…, and his daughter Tracy had a small role in the same film.
Beyond film, Reiner was an active voice in liberal political and social causes.
