Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul Jimenez and other sports personalities react to the death of Diogo Jota
The 28-year-old footballer died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain. The world of football is in mourning and there have been multiple reactions
In the early hours of July 3, Diego Jota and his brother Andra Silva suffered a car accident on the Rías Bajas Highway (A-52) in Cernadilla, Zamora. Both players were burned to death inside the car. Cristiano Ronaldo reacted to the tragedy.
Reports explain that the accident may have been caused by a tire burst. Firefighters from Zamora only arrived to put out the flames consuming the Lamborghini the players were in. The fire was brought under control, but it had already spread rapidly through the undergrowth surrounding the accident site.
"It doesn't make any sense. We were just now together on the national team, just now you were married. To his family, wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. RIP Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you," Cristiano Ronaldo wrote on his social media.
Diego Jota was capped 49 times by Portugal. The Porto-born footballer shared several caps with Cristiano Ronaldo. Jota scored 14 goals for his national team. In fact, the Liverpool forward was present at both UEFA Nations League titles won by the Portuguese national team (2019–2025).
Mexican striker Raúl Jiménez, who played two seasons alongside Jota at Wolverhampton Wanderers and maintained a close friendship with him, mourned the death on his Instagram account and said he still couldn't believe it.
Atlético Madrid also expressed their condolences to the player's family. Diogo Jota was signed by the "Colchonero" team in July 2016. At that time, Jota was a promising striker for Pacos Ferreira.
In fact, Pacos Ferreira was one of the clubs that saw Diogo Jota's talent in action and took a chance on the young Portuguese striker. This sporting institution was not far behind and shared a statement regarding the tragic accident. In addition, the club also mentioned André Silva, Diogo's brother, who also played for the club.
"They were two extraordinary people who stood out for their humility, responsibility, and enormous dedication to the club they played for. We will do everything possible to perpetuate their history, their legacy, so that the young people of this club continue to want to wear a shirt with their name on the back," the club wrote.
Jürgen Klopp, the respected German coach who led Liverpool for several years, also spoke about the sad passing of Diogo Jota. Klopp was in charge of his beloved Liverpool, where the Portuguese played 182 games.
“There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it! My heart is broken to hear of the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! You will be missed so much!” the German manager wrote.
