Inter Miami will be one of the seeded teams in the next edition of the Leagues Cup, which will be played between August 4 and September 6, and in which Toluca, Tigres, America, and Cruz Azul are listed as the top Mexican teams. positioned.
This tournament, which pits the 18 Liga MX teams against the 18 best MLS clubs, will return to the format of the last edition, in which the Seattle Sounders were crowned champions after defeating Inter Miami 3-0 in the final.
As announced by the organization in a statement this Tuesday, the first phase will consist of 54 matches, in which each club will face three teams from the opposing league.
MLS and Liga MX will have separate tables, and the top four teams from each will advance to the quarterfinals.
In this knockout phase, matches between leagues will be guaranteed. To determine the matchups, which will be announced soon, the organization compiled a ranking of all teams based on points earned during the last season. For Liga MX, the results of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments were considered, with Toluca, Tigres, America, and Cruz Azul occupying the top four positions. For MLS, the regular season of the last season was taken into account, in which the Philadelphia Union finished with the most points, followed by Cincinnati and Inter Miami. The last edition of the Leagues Cup was a success for MLS teams, who secured a majority of victories against Mexican teams and occupied all four semifinal spots. Unlike MLS, where this tournament takes place during the middle of the season, Liga MX begins at the end of August, when Mexican teams are still in preseason.
Since the format change, only MLS teams have won this trophy, which grants direct entry to the Concacaf Champions Cup.
