In a social media post, iconic pop star Britney Spears shared with her followers the wounds she still carries in her heart, addressing the “mistakes” she believes she made as a mother, as well as the “demoralizing” relationship she had with her own parents.

Spears used an old photograph of her adult children, Sean Preston and Jayden, to begin a story about her past.

The post begins with a memory: a picture of her children as children, who, Spears says, “were secretly taken to a beach by my mother and father.”

This revelation brought to light the feeling of exclusion that the singer has carried for years. “I wondered why I wasn't part of their fun secret escapades,” she wrote, adding that she felt “demoralized” living in a country where it was considered acceptable for her parents to maintain secret lives with their children.

The emotional impact was so devastating that, she confesses, she spent two months on her knees and crying. This episode is framed in the broader context of the legal guardianship that her father, Jamie Spears, exercised over her life and finances for more than a decade, a period that the artist publicly denounced as abusive and restrictive.

About the present

Spears recounted a recent conversation with one of her children that led her to question her own role as a mother. During the conversation, his son told him that “everything was science” and that he did not believe in God. For Spears, who prays “every day of her life,” this revelation came as a shock.

“At that moment I thought I had failed as a mother,” she admitted, explaining that her faith in the Holy Spirit is a fundamental pillar in her life. Honestly, he stated:

"I want to tell my children and people in general that I am sorry for my past mistakes." Britney Spears

The star, who began her career as a child on the Mickey Mouse Club and rose to global fame as a teen idol, reflected on how her identity was shaped and suppressed by the industry and her environment. “I never got to be me, the real Spears.”

In addition, the singer recounted an alleged incident that occurred at the height of her fame, when her father forbade her from going out to eat a hamburger with a friend again after the paparazzi photographed them.

“They never let me see my friend again or go out to old-fashioned hamburger restaurants,” he said, underlining the absurdity of the situation with a simple: “If you know me, I love food.”

The “Baby One More Time” singer concluded her post by lamenting that “she will never get those years back.” However, he showed a glimmer of pride for having had the courage to express his pain: “Honestly, it's incredibly sad.”
