Liga MX club owners officially announced the arrival of Atlante to replace Mazatlan, whose owners are withdrawing after five years, considering it no longer viable to continue investing in the port city. With this, the Potros return to the top division after a twelve-year absence.
They also gave the green light to the sale of Atlas, where by the Orlegui Group, headed by Alejandro Irarragorri, transferred its federative rights to Jose Miguel Bejos, a businessman who years earlier became involved in sports by acquiring the Puebla Pericos in the Mexican Baseball League. The above was confirmed by the Orlegui Group through a press release: "The General Assembly of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has approved, in its ordinary session held on this date, the sale of Atlas FC, resulting from the agreement reached between PRODI and Orlegi, whereby the former business group acquires ownership of the club. The transaction is subject to authorization by the National Antitrust Commission (CNA)." The Orlegui Group owned Atlas for almost seven years, from May 29, 2019, until April 2026, when its sale to the PRODI Group was announced. During this period, Alejandro Irarragorri's administration transformed the team, achieving the historic back-to-back championships (Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022). During this time, many urban legends circulated about how the Atlas owners sought to reach the pinnacle of Mexican soccer, and they succeeded with a back-to-back championship that ended a nearly 50-year title drought for the team from the bus stop. Orlegui also explained that: “The transaction reflects the shared vision of the parties to consolidate the club's institutional stability and ensure the continuity of a comprehensive, long-term, sustainable sports project aimed at strengthening its competitive performance and structural development,” he stated. “During his tenure, Orlegui has driven a comprehensive transformation process at Atlas FC in the sporting, institutional, and financial spheres.”Among the main results highlighted was winning back-to-back Liga MX championships—after more than seven decades without titles—,developing high-performance infrastructure that is a benchmark in the region with the construction of the AGA Academy, as well as consolidating its talent development processes, professional structures, operational stability, and foundation for sustained growth,” the information also stated to the media.
