Raúl Jiménez is one of the most experienced footballers in Javier Aguirre's squad. The Wolverhampton forward scored a goal in Mexico's 2-0 victory over South Africa. Landon Donovan and Victor Lindelof praised the Mexican attacker.
The 35-year-old attacker scored his first goal in a World Cup. This goal had eluded one of the historic scorers of the Mexican team. After three tournaments, Jiménez's first goal fell against South Africa.
"I was in Mexico City to see him play, it was his first time as a starter and it's his fourth tournament. It's a really incredible statistic," explained Landon Donovan, legendary United States soccer player on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast.
In addition to the goal being representative of his sports career, Landon Donovan highlighted that there was also a great emotional burden. Raúl Jiménez lost his father a few months ago and his entry was dedicated to heaven.
"He scored the goal in the 67th minute with a header, but I didn't realize something at that moment that I would have liked to know about his celebration. His father passed away three months ago, and as someone who lost his father six months ago, it really touched me a lot," he added.
Praise from Victor Lindelof
Raúl Jiménez shared with Victor Lindelof at Benfica. After several years facing each other in the Premier League, Lindelof only has words of praise about the Mexican national team forward. Lindelof was happy with his former teammate's goal.
"First of all, Raúl is a great person and I am very happy for him and the way he has been performing since we were both at Benfica. I saw the first game and he did incredible, so I am super happy for him. He has very good qualities as a forward," said the Aston Villa and Sweden national team defender.
