The MLS and Liga MX study playing the 2026 Leagues Cup with reciprocal visits
The 2026 Leagues Cup could change format if the reforms to the competition system being studied by MLS and Liga MX progress
Don Garber, commissioner of Major League Soccer (MLS), confirmed that there are options for the 2026 edition to undergo modifications to its competition format to include reciprocal visits and thus provide greater parity in the competition, as has been the recurring complaint of Liga MX teams.
This was confirmed by senior MLS official Dan Garber in an interview with David Faitelson of the TUDN network, who stated that the games would be played both in Mexico and in , reducing the margin of advantage of the North American teams in this tournament where the Aztec teams have played down their seriousness.
Regarding this matter, Faitelson published on his social networks the comment of the commissioner of the North American league: "We are not closed to anything," which opens a range of options, especially after confirming that there are analysis tables with the head of Liga MX, Mikel Arriola.
It will be in the next few days when we can know more about the possible changes and if it is economically viable to implement reciprocal visits, especially because in Liga MX stadiums this type of games do not generate much attraction for Mexican fans, while in the American Union it happens the opposite.
Garber's current stance is a far cry from what he thought in 2023 when he clearly stated that he didn't see the point in the Leagues Cup leaving the United States and on that occasion his stance totally rejected opening the competition to Mexican slots.
“I think that, economically, it certainly makes sense to have it here in the United States. But I think it's a great opportunity for Liga MX clubs to be able to give their fans who live in the United States the opportunity to see all of their teams, as opposed to two or three teams that are here summer after summer. So I think there's no reason to consider moving it, but… let's take a step back when this is all over and look at the whole thing,” the leader said.
The metamorphosis of the Leagues Cup
Due to all the series of complaints that have been generated since the creation of the Leagues Cup, this competition has undergone several transformations such as in the last edition where the groups of three teams were eliminated, where a mix of MLS and Liga MX clubs were made, now only two zones were determined, one from each League to qualify for the Quarterfinals (4 from Liga MX and 4 from MLS).
Due to all this, the competition was transformed with the idea that each League would have its best qualifiers after playing three games each and thus have more interesting matchups in the knockout round; However, Liga MX ended up saying goodbye in the first round of the quarterfinals.
MLS dominates
Although in the first two editions the dominance was of Mexican teams such as Cruz Azul in 2019 and Leon in 2021, the reality is that the dominance since 2023 has been of the MLS squads with the coronations of Inter Miami in 2023, Columbus 2024 and Seattle Sounders in the recent 2025 edition in a controversial final against Inter Miami where Luis Suarez spat on a member of the coaching staff of the squad from the northwest of the United States.
