The expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 300,000 Haitians marks a new chapter in immigration policy by leaving thousands of people without the protection that allowed them to live and work legally in the country while risky conditions persisted in their nation of origin.
According to information published by ABC News, the end of this benefit also reaches thousands of Syrian citizens and occurs after the Supreme Court allowed Donald Trump's administration to move forward with the cancellation of the program, after a series of litigation that had delayed its application. The case represents one of the largest TPS terminations in recent years.
ICE prepares new actions
According to a source consulted by the aforementioned media, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) is considering reinforcing its operations aimed at Haitians who previously had TPS. However, the same source indicated that these plans could still be modified depending on future court rulings.
The Haitian communities of Florida and Springfield, Ohio, are among those that could most quickly feel the effects of the new immigration measures, due to the significant concentration of program beneficiaries in those areas.
Beneficiaries are at risk
TPS was created to offer temporary protection to citizens of countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, or extraordinary conditions that prevent safe return. Without that status, those who do not have another legal means to remain in the country could face deportation proceedings.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the protection period has come to an end and noted that the agency maintains immigration enforcement operations throughout the country, although he avoided offering details on specific actions.
In addition, James Percival, DHS legal advisor, recently reiterated the call for those who lose TPS to accept the voluntary departure program promoted by the government.
“For those whose TPS is about to expire, these last few days offer one last opportunity to receive $2,600 and a free flight home,” Percival wrote on the X social network.
