The New York Police (NYPD) is investigating the death of a 24-year-old man who was shot inside an apartment in the Harlem neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The case also involves a rookie agent of the corporation, who, according to local media, is the brother of the victim and is part of the people under investigation.

So far, authorities have not filed charges or made any arrests.

The victim died at the scene

The NYPD reported that officers responded around 1:32 a.m. to an apartment building located near Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Macombs Place, after receiving a call to the 911 emergency service.

Upon entering the property they found a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the right eye.

Emergency medical services personnel confirmed his death at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending official notification of his next of kin.

The case is investigated by the NYPD's Force Investigation Division, a unit specialized in incidents related to the use of firearms by police officers.

According to versions published by American media, investigators are trying to establish if the rookie officer accidentally shot his brother or if the victim caused the wound self-inflicted.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed any of these hypotheses and indicated that the investigation continues.

Agents collected evidence in the apartment

During the early hours of Saturday, personnel from the criminalistics unit processed the scene of the incident.

Investigators were seen removing evidence from the apartment, while officials from the Medical Examiner's Office transported the victim's body.

Videos spread on social networks showed a group of people gathered outside the building while police work continued.

The NYPD reiterated that no arrests have been made in connection with the case.

It has also not been reported how exactly the shooting occurred or what circumstances surrounded the incident.
