Mexican authorities capture an alleged financial operator of the Northeast Cartel in Yucatan
Justo Aurelio Rivera Parrazales, who operated under a sophisticated facade of a respectable businessman, is identified as a fundamental pillar of the Cartel.
The federal authorities of Mexico reported this Sunday on the capture of Justo Aurelio Rivera Parrazales, identified as an alleged logistical and financial operator of the Northeast Cartel, during an operation carried out in the city of Mérida, Yucatán (southeast of Mexico), which included simultaneous searches and the seizure of assets valued at more than 145 million pesos, equivalent to about 8.2 million dollars.
According to the Security Cabinet of the Government of Mexico, the arrest was the result of a joint investigation led by the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Special Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) and the Attorney General's Office (FGR).
Authorities indicated that Rivera Parrazales allegedly played a key role in the administration of the criminal group's financial resources and in the design of money laundering schemes, activities considered essential to maintain the operations of the criminal organization in different regions of the country.
Investigation continues into possible financial links
As part of the investigation, federal forces executed four search warrants on properties located in different parts of Mérida and at the Komchén police station, where activities related to illicit operations were allegedly carried out.
During the proceedings, in addition to the capture of the alleged financial operator, 15 high-end vehicles, a safe, two firearms, cartridges of different calibers, a bag with apparent methamphetamine, cash in dollars, jewelry, electronic banking devices, communication and computing equipment, as well as documentation and digital storage media that will be incorporated into the investigation were seized.
The authorities estimated that the value of the seized assets is equivalent to $8,299,000 dollars, a figure that, according to the Mexican Government, represents a significant impact on the financial capacity of the criminal organization.
The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry, which will continue with investigations to determine his legal situation and the possible scope of the financial network that he allegedly operated.
Investigation continues into possible financial links
Although various journalistic reports have mentioned possible relationships between Rivera Parrazales and companies registered in Chiapas, as well as alleged links with other criminal groups and high-profile cases, federal authorities have not officially confirmed these lines of investigation, so these allegations remain under analysis.
The capture occurs in a context of greater pressure against the financial structures of the Mexican cartels. In February of this year, President Donald Trump's administration designated six drug trafficking groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, including the Northeast Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Gulf Cartel and La Nueva Familia Michoacana, as part of a strategy to intensify the fight against drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, to the United States.
The Mexican authorities indicated that coordination between security and intelligence agencies will continue to focus on identifying and dismantling the economic networks that allow the operation of criminal organizations, considering that weakening their sources of financing constitutes one of the main fronts in the fight against organized crime.
