The Prosecutor's Office for the Southern District of New York proposed that the drug trafficking trial against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, begin in June 2027, according to a document filed in federal court in New York.

The proposal was presented jointly by the Prosecutor's Office and the defense before the hearing scheduled for this Wednesday, in which federal judge Alvin Hellerstein will review the process calendar and decide whether to approve the suggested dates or make modifications.

According to the schedule proposed by the parties, the exchange of evidence and the presentation of pre-trial appeals will continue in the coming months.

The defense plans to begin presenting its first motions in September of this year, while the US Government expects to hand over most of the classified material related to the case in November.

Maduro and Flores remain in custody in the United States and have pleaded not guilty to the charges they face. The accusation includes crimes related to drug trafficking, including conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and trafficking of cocaine into the United States.

According to the documentation presented to the court, the parties also left open the possibility of requesting adjustments to the procedural calendar as the case progresses.

This Wednesday's hearing will mark a new step in the judicial process, although it will be the judge who has the last word on the final date for the start of the trial.
