A week after canceling, Kelly Clarkson starts her residency in Las Vegas
Sometimes we can not help our bodies, Kelly Clarkson told us as she kicked off her new residency.
After a week of uncertainty, tears, and a voice on strike, Kelly Clarkson showed that her thing is not just singing, but also coming back with strength... and a sense of humor. On July 11, the Grammy winner officially kicked off her new Las Vegas residency, 'Kelly Clarkson: Studio Sessions,' with an intimate and very personal show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
Of course, the debut didn't go according to the original script. The real premiere was scheduled for the weekend before, but Clarkson had to cancel at the last minute due to health concerns.
"I cried. I was so sick, it was horrible," she confessed between laughs and tequila shots throughout the evening. "I'm so sorry if some of you had tickets for last weekend. Sometimes we can't stop our bodies from saying enough."
The decision to cancel, she explained, was to protect her vocal cords after intense rehearsals. And although she didn't want to disappoint her fans, a source close to the show said she was "devastated" not to be able to perform. Fortunately, the audience's affection and a standing ovation reminded her that the wait was worth it.
A studio session... but with thousands of people
Unlike the dazzling glamor usually seen at Vegas shows, Clarkson opted for something more intimate. Wearing jeans, a Stevie Nicks T-shirt, and a band surrounding her as if they were in the middle of a rehearsal, the singer created the atmosphere of a live studio session. No fireworks: here the star was, without a doubt, her voice and her authenticity.
During the two-hour show, she played hits like 'Since U Been Gone,' 'Stronger,' and 'My Life Would Suck Without You,' but also included deeper tracks like 'Sober' and 'Tight Rope.' And as a nice nod to Las Vegas' legacy, she also covered a Dolly Parton song.
In an unexpected moment, Clarkson revealed to the audience that she had sold part of her music catalog and especially thanked her longtime pianist, Jason Halbert. "My music wouldn't be my music without him," she said emotionally.
So, between confessions, Laughter, music, and a little tequila, Kelly Clarkson conquered Las Vegas once again, making it clear that the shows may be canceled... but the talent won't.
