They say that what is recorded on paper not even God the Father can remove it. Precisely the teams of the Liga Expansión MX suffered this phenomenon firsthand, after the Liga MX officially announced that promotion and relegation was definitively eliminated starting with the current Apertura 2026 tournament.

The legal blow erased the sporting hopes of an entire circuit in one fell swoop, transforming the regulations into an insurmountable wall.

For that reason, on the different fronts where the ball began to roll on this opening day, an unprecedented scenario was experienced. The players, as a sign of protest against a decision that they consider to be a direct abuse of the spirit of competition itself and the development of Mexican soccer, joined together in a pact of sporting silence: they refused to play actively during the first minute of each match.

This position of the footballers was the last resort of a silent war; a battle that little by little they have been losing against the economic power of the Liga MX clubs. The background is dense: the timeshare and the top circuit leaders operated regardless of the apparent violation of the First Division's own statute, which dictates that any structural modification to its regulations requires, by internal law, 55 percent of the votes of the General Assembly of the Mexican Football Federation.

Opacity at the polls and abuse of power

Anticipating the criticism, the First Division – in a clear display of force by the clubs with the greatest economic power – took the annulment of promotion and relegation to an official nature by shielding it within its competition regulations.

However, the regulatory change left too many questions in the air, especially due to the opacity with which the consensus was handled, without ever revealing how they convinced (or pressured) the sectors of the Premier League or the Third Division to join and legitimize this controversial decision.

The main disagreement of the silver circuit franchises is the stripping of their reason for existence. The cancellation of the only way that the teams had to aspire to play in the highest circuit in the short term for sporting merits was made official.

This blockage ignores the efforts of the directives that were already working to overcome the demanding obstacles of infrastructure, charge books and economic capacity that the system itself had imposed on them.

It is worth remembering that the origin of this outrage dates back to April 2020. Under the pretext of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Liga MX clubs suspended promotion and relegation “temporarily”, citing alleged unsustainable financial problems if open competition was preserved.

That extension froze the dreams of many; They maintained uncertainty for years until, just a week ago, they decided to officially put an end to any intention to revive the mechanism, liquidating the aspirations of the Liga Expansión MX.

Faced with the decree of the offices, the teams decided to bet on a moral and sporting protest expressed in different tones. The epicenter of this visual disagreement was experienced strongly in the match between Mineros de Zacatecas and Correcaminos, as well as on other fronts where the protagonists looked for a way to show that Mexican soccer is in competitive mourning.

For this reason, when the initial whistle blew, the ball did not seek the rival goal. The players limited themselves to making short, lateral passes without intensity in the central circle, showing a total unwillingness to compete on a playing field whose reward rules have been altered. The opposing team only made a few slight formal movements, mutually respecting the claim and giving up pressure or stealing the ball.

The action lasted exactly 47 seconds. It was not necessary to reach the full minute to shake the live broadcasts, initially surprising the commentators of each game, who quickly deciphered the message: it was a cry for help and an act of peaceful rebellion against the long pants decision that ended, suddenly, with the right to win a place in the Liga MX from the field.
