Becky G expresses her pride in her Latin roots: It motivates me to show that we deserve to be happy
The American singer of Mexican origin spoke about the figures who, for fear of losing followers, avoid talking about what Latinos experience in the U.S.
Becky G, the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and an influential figure in Latin music, is not afraid to raise her voice and uses her social networks to openly criticize immigration policies in the United States.
In a recent interview with EFE, the singer of “Mayores” indicated that, although she understands that not all artists want to use their platform to talk about difficult topics, she assured that the fear of losing followers is incomparable to the fear of losing your community.
“I understand that not all artists give their platform to these issues, because they are very complex,” says the American singer.
Following the recent protests in cities like Los Angeles due to immigration raids in the United States, Becky G claims to be the “proud granddaughter of immigrants.”
"My parents were born in the United States, but especially being such young parents, I saw them suffer and sacrifice a lot. That makes me very sad, but also as an artist it motivates me to show that we deserve to be happy, respected and represented," she assured.
The singer indicated, in statements to Europa Press, that people who want to celebrate Latin culture should also help protect it.
"If people want to celebrate my successes, I hope they can educate themselves and also put themselves in the position to help the community. I feel more than ever the responsibility to share the light, because we deserve to feel happiness too, not just sadness. Obviously there is a lot of pain right now and I am grateful for giving me the opportunity to talk about these issues, even though we are here in Spain," she said.
Since Trump's return to the White House, raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have intensified, especially in cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and New York.
The measures, part of a strict immigration policy, caused thousands of people to take to the streets to demand respect for the rights of migrants and an end to mass deportations.
Last month in Los Angeles, one of the hardest hit cities, there were clashes between protesters and police, as well as arrests of those protesting immigration policies.
