The cinematographic phenomenon that captivated the world will have a second part. Lionsgate officially confirmed that the sequel to the biopic “Michael” is already in development, after the resounding success of the first installment, which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing biopic in history.
Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate's film division, revealed that the studio, as cited by Variety, hopes to begin production in late 2026 or early 2027, with the goal of releasing the sequel in late 2027 or the first half of 2028.
One of the key aspects of this production is that it will take advantage of already filmed material. Fogelson confirmed that the studio has several sequences, especially large-scale musical numbers, recorded during the production of the first film that will be incorporated into the sequel.
“We are focused on how to ensure that we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest and best sequel,” he stated.
What story will it tell?
It has not yet been confirmed which period of Michael Jackson's life the second film will address. The first installment culminated in 1987 with the “Bad” tour, leaving out stages such as the release of the album “Dangerous” and the years marked by accusations of child sexual abuse.
The sequel could move “back and forth” in time, taking advantage of the large number of stories and songs that were not included in the first film.
The first film omitted the most controversial aspects of Jackson's life due to a legal clause prohibiting representation of one of the accusers. This forced costly reshoots, but the deleted material could now find its place in the sequel. Director Antoine Fuqua expressed interest in continuing to direct the project.
The team will once again feature Jaafar Jackson, the singer's nephew, whose performance was acclaimed by the public and critics. Fans are looking forward to this new installment that promises to continue exploring the legacy of the King of Pop.
