New CJI DY Chandrachud: The President of India has appointed Justice Dhananjay Y Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 9, 2022. Justice Chandrachud's tenure as CJI will start from November 9, 2022. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has given this information by tweeting.
Justice Chandrachud to take over on 9 November 2022
It is noteworthy that the tenure of the current CJI Justice UU Lalit is going to end on November 8. In view of this, the government had written a letter to the incumbent CJI Lalit on 7 October requesting him to recommend his successor. In response to this, CJI Lalit had sent the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor. On which the President has put his assent. As per the seniority list, Justice Chandrachud is the senior-most after the incumbent CJI Lalit. In such a situation, according to the established tradition, his name was recommended. Justice Chandrachud will take over on November 9, 2022.
Justice Chandrachud's father has also been the Chief Justice
Justice Chandrachud's father, Justice YV Chandrachud, was the 16th Chief Justice of India from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. Born on November 11, 1959, Justice DY Chandrachud's mother Prabha Chandrachud was a classical musician. After completing his schooling in Mumbai and Delhi, he graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. After this, he obtained LLB degree from Delhi University in 1982 and then completed LLM from Harvard University in America. After this, in 1986, he earned a PhD in Juridical Sciences.
