Chiapas police officers shown on video torturing 2 detained people
In the images, which went viral on social networks, uniformed men are seen placing plastic bags over the faces of detainees.
The dissemination of videos showing agents of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Chiapas carrying out acts of torture against detained people led to an investigation and the arrest of ten officials allegedly involved in the events.
In the images, which went viral on social networks, uniformed men are seen placing plastic bags over the faces of detainees who remain subdued and with their hands tied, in apparent acts of suffocation. The images generated outrage among Internet users and human rights organizations.
After the dissemination of the material, the governor of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, asked the state prosecutor, Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, to act immediately to clarify the facts and punish those responsible.
The president recalled that the human rights of any person in custody must be respected, regardless of the crimes attributed to them.
The Prosecutor's Office reported that it opened an investigation and appointed a special group to gather evidence and determine responsibilities.
According to the first investigations, the events occurred on March 14 during an operation against vehicle theft in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
Prosecutor Llaven Abarca confirmed that ten people have been arrested so far: a deputy director, three Public Ministry agents, a secretary and five police officers, who remained at the disposal of the ministerial authorities while the investigations continue.
Human rights organizations and defenders have insisted on the need to fully clarify the case and guarantee that those responsible face the corresponding legal consequences, considering that the images show possible serious violations of the fundamental rights of those detained.
