Former presidential candidate of Mexico warns that there is a risk of a US intervention in the country
Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, who was a presidential candidate three times, believes that Trump's stance could escalate to scenarios of greater tension
The founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution maintained that the comments of the US president reflect an anti-Mexican stance that could escalate into scenarios of greater bilateral tension.
Although he considered it unnecessary to be alarmist, he affirmed that the risk exists and that it would be necessary to calmly analyze the possible political and social reactions in the event of an unauthorized intervention.
Cardenas made these statements during a conversation with historian and analyst Sergio Aguayo Quesada, coordinator of the Seminar on Violence and Peace at El Colegio de Mexico, at the start of the “Conversations” series, a space dedicated to dialogue with figures in national public life.
In the interview, he was asked his opinion on the dangers that Mexico faces given the statements of the US president, who reiterated during a meeting in Miami with leaders of the continent that the country has become the center of regional violence. Cardenas stated that Trump's remarks have been "very disrespectful" and reflect a clearly adverse position toward Mexico. The politician, who was a presidential candidate three times, indicated that he is unclear about how a foreign intervention might materialize or what the reactions of the Mexican government or various social sectors would be. However, he assured that he would publicly participate in expressing his rejection of any undue interference. He also considered that such an action would provoke reactions not only within Mexico, but also in the United States. both among Mexican communities and among US citizens who might oppose a measure he described as illegal and contrary to the relationship between the two countries.
