President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other federal officials claim that Democrats want to authorize health insurance for undocumented immigrants, which is the reason for the government shutdown because there is no agreement.

However, Democrats are not pushing for any such reform to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which already prevents undocumented immigrants in the United States from receiving federally funded health insurance.

“Democrats will shut down the federal government and cause serious harm to American citizens because President Trump will not force taxpayers to fund free benefits for undocumented immigrants,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt wrote in X on September 26. “Democrats are radical and their priority is not the United States.”

That kind of message has been echoed by other officials, including Vice President Vance, after a meeting with leading congressional Democrats Hakeem Jeffries of the House and Senator Chuck Schumer, both of New York.

Even Stephen Miller, senior policy adviser at the White House, has spread the same message.

“Senate Democrats are about to block a simple, routine government funding bill because it doesn’t include free health care for undocumented immigrants,” Miller wrote.

The president even released an artificial intelligence video with Mexican imagery and music, which has been called racist, to claim that Democrats want greater protections for undocumented immigrants.

“Look, guys, there’s no way to sugarcoat it. Nobody likes Democrats. […] Even Latinos hate us. So we need new voters, and if we give them health care free to all these illegal immigrants, maybe we will get them to support us and vote for us,”says the fake message in the purported Schumer voice promoted by President Trump.

Senator Ruben Gallego (Arizona) even responded to one of Vice President Vance’s messages on X about the false claim.

“People without papers cannot access health insurance from the federal government — not Obamacare, Medicaid, or Medicare,” Gallego wrote on X. “Trump is going to shut down the government based on a lie, just because he doesn’t want to lower the price of premiums for the middle class.”

Schumer called the claims by Trump and his allies “a bald-faced lie.”

“Why do they insist on this? Because they are afraid to talk about the real problem: health care for American citizens,” Schumer warned.

What is the Democratic plan?

Democrats have a budget proposal to extend ACA subsidies before they expire at the end of the year, which would lead to 15 million Americans lose health coverage due to the new “big and beautiful” law passed by Republicans and signed into law by President Trump.

The only immigrants covered by the ACA are subsidies for legal immigrants—those who qualify under passed laws. The Trump administration claims that includes all immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, which is false.

“Federal law prohibits the use of public funds to finance health care for undocumented immigrants,” Jeffries said at a press conference Monday. “Democrats have never suggested that we want to change federal law.”

If a budget deal isn’t reached, several government services would shut down the first minute of October 1, but the president even noted that doing so could bring “benefits.”

“Government shutdowns can bring a lot of benefits. We can eliminate a lot of things we didn’t want,” he said Tuesday.
