Wimbledon prevents Nuno Borges from playing with a shirt to pay tribute to Diogo Jota
The tournament organizers adhered to the strict dress code and only allowed him to wear black ribbons as a sign of mourning.
The Wimbledon organizers did not allow the Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges to wear a Portugal shirt in his match against Karen Khachanov in honor of the late Diogo Jota. The London tournament has a strict dress code whereby all white must be worn, except for a few small exceptions that allow for minimal colored lines, such as on the badge on the clothing.
However, in light of the tragedy suffered by Jota and his brother André, who died in a traffic accident last Thursday, they decided to offer tennis players the chance to pay tribute to him with a black ribbon. Both Borges and doubles player Francisco Cabral wore it.
“I know Wimbledon isn't usually very flexible with clothing, but they told me I could do something to pay tribute to Jota, so I think it was a nice gesture. He was a great footballer; it was a tragedy,” said Borges after the defeat to Khachanov.
“At first, we talked about wearing the Portugal shirt when I went out on court. I even tried to find a white one, but they turned me down, so we ended up doing something a little smaller,” added the Portuguese.
