Guido Pizarro's time as coach of Tigres came to an end just two days after the start of the Apertura Tournament. The Monterrey club reported this Tuesday that the Argentine decided to leave the position for personal reasons, a decision he made a few days before the match against Querétaro corresponding to the third round of the championship.
The institution announced the news through a message on social networks in which it thanked the coach for the work done and indicated that it will announce the new coaching staff later.
The departure puts an end to a thirteen-year relationship between Pizarro and Tigres, a period in which he was one of the most representative figures of the club, first as a footballer and later as a coach. The Argentine played two spells with the team between 2013 and 2017 and between 2018 and 2025, and won four league titles before retiring from the field.
After his resignation was announced, Pizarro published a letter addressed to the fans and the institution. "After thirteen years in this institution, as a player and as a technical director, I have made the decision to step aside. I thank Tigres and all the people who work to make this club function and grow. To the incomparable fans, thank you for the support and affection towards me and my family during these thirteen years," he wrote.
Pizarro rules out that the results influenced his decision
The former midfielder clarified that the decision was not related to the start of the Apertura, in which Tigres lost 3-1 against Tijuana on the first day and tied 2-2 with San Luis on the second.
“I want to make it clear that it is not a decision motivated by results, but the consequence of a process of conversations and reflection sustained over time,” he explained.
In a second message he delved into the reasons that led him to leave the position. "I have always believed that a coach must lead from full conviction. And I maintain that this profession requires a global conviction: when the certainty that the direction of the project is moving in one direction is lost, the most responsible thing to do with the club, with the group, with the fans and with myself is to take a step aside."
The coach did not mention the lack of reinforcements or the recent departure of Ángel Correa to River Plate as the reason for his departure.
A short cycle on the bench, but with a disputed final
Pizarro assumed the technical direction of Tigres immediately after retiring as a player in mid-2025. In his first tournament he led the team to the Mexican soccer final, although they ended up losing it to Toluca.
During his management he directed 74 official matches, with a balance of 33 wins, 22 draws and 19 losses. Under his command, the cats scored 133 goals and conceded 96.
Before saying goodbye, the Argentine assured that he was leaving “calm and in peace” and left open the possibility of meeting the institution again in the future. "The coaches, the players and the managers have passed. Tigres and its people remain. I hope the path crosses us again," he expressed.
While the board defines his successor, the club confirmed that Hernán Elizondo, coach of the under-21 category, will lead on an interim basis next Saturday's match against Querétaro.
