Álex Aguinaga strongly criticized Ecuador's match against Mexico in the World Cup
The former soccer player considers that Ecuadorian soccer players seemed like they were from the second division. Aguinaga highlighted the character of Mexico
The Ecuador team was one of the great disappointments of the 2026 World Cup. Sebastián Beccacece's team was eliminated in the round of 32 by the Mexico team. Álex Aguinaga questioned the level shown by the Ecuadorian soccer players.
In general terms, La Tri did not have a good World Cup. The South American team lost against Ivory Coast, tied with Curacao and beat Germany in the group stage. But in the round of 32 they were exposed by a very well-worked Mexican team.
"And on the other side, well, obviously, let's see, the truth is a Mexico that excites you. Because that rhythm that they put on it seemed like a European team against a second division team," Aguinaga said in statements compiled by Fox Sports.
Ecuador, on paper, was the favorite team in the series. The South American team had the presence of players who played in the UEFA Champions League final and several players who play for important teams in Europe. But Álex Aguinaga considers that there was never an understanding with Beccacece's approaches.
"Well, the coach's tactical strategy ruined everyone. He exposed many players, and then, well, the low levels of some," he added.
Álex Aguinaga highlighted the performance of several players on the Ecuadorian team. Without distinction, Aguinaga pointed out players from the defensive sector and the offensive sector. This team only scored a goal in one World Cup match and received goals in three of the four matches.
"For me I had to take out eight players for the second half... Enner lost with Gonzalo Plata, the middle of the field without intensity, Moisés very below his level. Vite, because they obviously had him running around everywhere. The number followed the Mexican players. Pacho was not at his level. And well, Alan Franco, who was the most exhibited in this Ecuadorian team," explained the former soccer player.
