Ashley Tisdale turns her experience as a mother into the black comedy “Toxic Moms” for Netflix
The origin of “Toxic Moms” lies in Tisdale's viral essay, "Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group," published in The Cut
Actress Ashley Tisdale, known for her role in the “High School Musical” franchise, is developing a new comedy series for Netflix titled “Toxic Moms,” as confirmed by Deadline. The project, which is in the development phase, arises after the commotion caused by a personal essay that the actress published at the beginning of the year.
The series, described as a half-hour black comedy, follows a new mother who, amid exhaustion and isolation, finds herself drawn to an exclusive group of wealthy mothers. The plot thickens when the group reveals their darker side, raising a key question: in the loneliness of motherhood, how far would you go to feel part of a community?
What is the origin?
The origin of “Toxic Moms” lies in Tisdale’s viral essay, “Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group,” published in The Cut in January 2026.
In the text, the actress recounted her experience of feeling excluded from a group of mother friends, describing behaviors that reminded her of high school and that led her to distance herself from the group. The essay sparked intense speculation on the internet to identify the other celebrities who could be part of that group, among whom Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore and Meghan Trainor were mentioned.
To develop the series, Tisdale has surrounded himself with a top-notch team. Screenwriter Sabrina Jalees will write the script, while actress and comedian Ali Wong will serve as executive producer and could direct the pilot episode if the series is greenlit to become a regular production. The three, along with Tisdale, will serve as executive producers.
“Toxic Moms” thus joins the growing list of Netflix comedies with female protagonists, such as “Running Point” and “Nobody Wants This”, and promises to offer a satirical and dark look at the complex and, at times, absurd social codes of modern motherhood, based on the own experience of its creator and protagonist.
